What does a broken icon mean? How can I address the problem?

This is Canary here, I searched and cannot find my original post

Inside on the server...several folders, do they load from the bottom or from the top?

I'm trying to see if my picture even gets on the server.

I think it was David who mentioned an interface....where he could see how things were coded.

Can I see it too?

I am determined to find the problem I'm experiencing regarding not being able to get pictures on my site to show.

Hi,

I have not been following what advice you may have got, but as to your images, a broken CC icon means the image was not found.

The reason why it was not found can be
It hasn't been uploaded
It was uploaded to a different location than what is specified on your HTML page
There might be name issues: Image.jpg is not the same as image.jpg, or 'My Image.jpg' is not the same as 'my_image.jpg'.

The trick is to use only lowercase, both for the image name and the extension (jpg, gif, png or whatever).

In order to see what you have uploaded where, you need a stand-alone ftp client. CC Free FTP will do. With it you can log into your server and look around. If you have specified in your html document that images should load from a folder named 'images', then check if the images are in that folder. If they are somewhere else, then upload them to that folder.

I hope this helps.

Is it this site, that I found in another thread?
http://www.seabirdstudio.com

I see there is a missing image on the front page, and it is referenced like this:

<img src="P1220910.JPG" width="600" height="400" alt="bear" title="polar bear" border="0" />

So obviously you don't use a subfolder called 'images' (according to this link), but there is no image called P1220910.JPG in your root folder. I also tried P1220910.jpg, to no avail. So then either the image hasn't been uploaded, or it has been uploaded to somewhere wrong, or you have named it differently. Check that with the FTP client I suggested.

I also spotted that you are using a 6 years old version of the html Editor. I'd stronly advise you to get the newest one, it doesn't cost you anything.

This makes 3 threads all concerned with broken images on Bird's site. :o Here's the main one:
http://www.coffeecup.com/forums/html-ed … rk-online/
There's another right below this one in the HTML Editor forum. So there's a lot of the same advice and suggestions in all 3 threads. Might be good to put it all in one place so new viewers won't be repeating what's already been offered in another thread. ;)

I moved the main thread into the Editor discussion and have edited your link, Paintbrush. I will close the two other threads so that any further discussion must take place here.

Other TWO links?? I only know about one and it was closed, yesterday I think, Anyway. I have been out to my server many times. I have 6 or 7 folders, I don't know why and I didn't do it on purpose. And yes, the pages that work are with Editor 6, but the front page and the reviews page are in the new editor, I will not move the other pages until I am able to get pictures up AND music up. I think they have the same problem.

Thank you everyone for answering. Maybe with 5 heads, one will light up and blink!! Come to think of it, years and years ago I used to HAVE a blinking red light on my website. You only see that which I have boiled down for what I need now.

Ok, I went day before yesterday and did not see any of the pictures I have lined up for the front page. That means they are not getting through. You'd think that if I uploaded to every folder, one would hit and I
d then know... but that is not the case. So that means there is something wrong with my FTP do you think? I am going now to download a new one to see, I will tell you what happens.

yes, www.seabirdstudio.com

do you need any more co-ordinates?

Thank you Canary

When you say 'got my picture into images on my project', are you then talking about locally, on your computer, or do you have a folder 'images' inside a folder 'projects' on the web?

And when saying ' free ftp wouldn't let me see the "other side" whats in the server', does that mean that you are not able to log into your server?

I had a look at the source code of your site, and you have placed the image P1220910.JPG three times, and two of them are enormous, width="3264" height="2448". I think you should remove them, since you already have the same image in width="600" height="400".

I can't quite find out what your problem really is. We have advised you on image names, lowercase letters, various folders. If that doesn't work, it must be something in your FTP settings. Or your folder structure on the server. You could open a support ticket and ask someone at CC take a look at your server (that means giving them your user details to the server), or if you know of somebody who you trust, let them take a look for you. I'd be glad to help, but you don't know me... ;)

I re-read some of your posts. You mention 6 or 7 folders on your server. Could you let us know what they are called? Is one of them called public_html?
