Okay my goal here is to get this new website up. The build of the site is not the problem. I understand the VSD platform and how it functions and find it wonderful as I said a new world has opened up from template based.

It is the technical settings thatI I want to get correct so when it comes time to publish it goes smoothly.

Steve we don't have an SDRIVE account we published walkyourdogwithlove through FTP. i would like to do the same here and when ready to publish will do that. This new site was always done through template base and they, the hosting companies, pretty much do all the technical for you. It was up and running with a host for three years. We made the decision to change hosts because of a terms of service issue. It was an big decision to do this but it was amiable on both sides. We have owned this software but have never put it to much use and that is now what we ae doing. I love the build platform and it make sense to me. FTP I know a little of but SDRIVE is new to me. I looked for an explanation of Sdrive in the manual but I did not find it. I will look further in the forums and we will decide how to proceed. I still believe my warning suggestion to new users to get all the technical settings done properly before proceeding is a good one and might save a lot of people time and frustration.

Paintbrush you asked me about user name. I know what a user name is but I'm not sure where you are asking me to put in or create this user name when filling in the FTP settings. Where or what are you refering to?
You then said the very first time you save your sight do it as save as. Maybe I'm not understanding again where you are talking about. I know "save" and "save as" as clear as day. As I work on the site I have saved it many times. Never have I used the save as option when saving. Maybe we are talking about two different areas of application with CC or VSD.

When I first started with VSD I inquired what was to go into page name and page id when it appeared but was never told that the first page has to be named index Eric explained page name is up in the left on top of the page and is more for my own use but the id is important as part of search engine capability. Never was it mentioned that the first page id had to be named index. I believe this is an easy fix. If you do not do this as a technician one really doesn't know this simple thing. This inquiry to Eric was under the thread "click to enlarge"

The "click to Enlarge" idea I used was not Eric's It was either Vin's idea or Paitbrush's idea. Making a seperate page for each image. This is so beautiful because you can put a little more info on the page then just the image.

I think I was having a communication problem in what I was asking. Paintbrush I will be honest I'm not clear where you are asking me to use user id and the where you are talking about save as.

Again I'm not technical but when clear I understand then I have learned something new and something that we serve me as I build new sites outside of template base. We cleaned up the whole folder thing and creating an image folder and everything is now in order. So please help me understand what you are talking about here so these issues can be cleaned up and when it comes time to publish it will be smooth.

Lastly. This VSD platform is what I have always invisioned as to how I would like to build a website. Once you know the platform you can place things step by step exactly how you want and are not constrained by templates. I love this and am excited to finally put this software to use.

So please if there is a miscommunication on my part I apologize but help me to understand so I can correct it. I am truly capable. It is just new things.

Thank you

daniel - The name that you give to your main page within VSD is more or less irrelevant, as VSD will name the page file index.html

Phil Hi,

I'm not sure how to respond to your post. I'm getting conflicting information about the page name and id. Again my goal is to get all of the technical settings set properly and the when it comes time to upload it will go smoothly. and I can do it through the FTP software we have. There was an issue with uplaod back in August but it was worked through. It was partly my fault. I'm not technical and just trying to get it done properly before proceeding any further.

Hopefully i'll get a response back from Paintbrush since she is a little familiar with my progress.

Thank you Phil

I tried it out before I posted, just to be sure I didn't feed bad info. I named my ONLY page as "idunno" and upon saving the project, in the "idunno_website" folder was 1 file named "index.html"

I think I was having a communication problem in what I was asking.

 OK, let's try it again.
First, my mistake – don't know where I got the idea you were using an SDrive Account :P

Don't worry about the save/save as; if you can click the .vnu icon and your site opens – you're set.
Page Properties is where you set your names and IDs:
http://callie.coffeecup.com/storage/page-properties.png
The Name shows up in the address bar (see top line in image below) and the Page ID shows up after your URL (actual site name + .com or .org, etc.). So you'll see your page IDs as you click on different pages (like: site.com/contact or site.com/about).
(Maybe your host/server doesn't require "index", but all mine do so I always use index as the home page ID just to be safe.)

And finally... User names and passwords. Find this under Publish > FTP Account Settings:
You'll get this information from your hosting company. Here's an example"
http://callie.coffeecup.com/storage/ftp.png
Not every host is the same, so you need to input that info exactly as your host tells you to.
(For example: Mine requires the Remote Folder to be blank, others need public_html there).

Hope this clears things up :)

Not from what I saw... I set both name and Page ID as "Idunno" and saved the project. With only one page created the only file in my project folder was index.html

If you only have one page in VSD, it will set that as the index page. If there are multiple pages, then you can choose what to name/ID each one.
If I try to upload my site without an index page (put 'home' in the ID instead), I get an error message.
But it might not be this way for all hosts/servers.

One can always skip the IDs and just have page1.html, page2.html.... show up instead

Alright... (keep in mind I hadn't really been using VSD so I am testing on the fly ;))

I just created a new project for Idunno. First page created I titled "Idunno1" and gave an ID of "Idunnomain". I added a page, titled "Idunno2" and ID of "Idunnoadd"... I now save the project and open the folder it saves the site files in, I see index.html (which is the first page created) and idunnoadd.html

The title does appear to be what will be published next to the favicon at the top of the browser.

Paintbrush Hi,

I think the problem here is you started talking about FTP and I never inquired about this and thought you were refering to things within VSD. I will get to FTP once I get my site completely ready to publish. I have a straight FTP account and know my username and password and will and would of engaged my host anyway before starting.

My sight comes up perfectly fine when I click .vsu within my site folder so am I to assume the save and save as that you were refering to is a moot point?

I know how to change the page id and inquired about this when I first came upon it and nobody mentioned the index issue. I will take your advice and change it to index to be safe with my host/server.

Thank you for this advice
.
Dear Paintbrush and Steve,

For my own sake I need to speak here a bit. I have been on CC's forum now for just about four days, four days, learning a new piece of software. The last posts I received from you, Steve (who helped me with a past FTP problem) and Paintbrush were a bit harsh and deaming. At no point did I claim to be a wizard and was very clear that I am not technical when it comes to website building. I have in my short time here praised this forum and the VSD platform has absolutely opened up a new world to me. I look forward to using it for all of my web building needs. I have been using computers almost since computers have existed. Yes, maybe there are some basic things I haven't used (folders) but I've done it my way and most people who know me if asked would say I am above average in computer skills. I am not trying to give kudos to myself just painting a picture. A computer is a tool, necessary in today's world. As I stated I am not a technical expert and never claimed to be but I do wonderful things with computers and certain programs. Somehow the thread went onto this FTP thing. It wasn't even a thought in my head nor did I ask about it. I didn't know in the least what you were talking about or why. When I tried to clear up what was going on I was made to feel as though I was less and should not be here. It truly sadden me. I was having a great time learning this program and excited about the prospects I see with VSD. I am going to move forward from this point but this short relationship was unfortunately tainted. I thought your help was amazing. I want to know that I can freely rely on the people in this forum for my technical question no matter how naive they may sound to others. I did nothing wrong. I tried to be clear and courteous in my requests. Our websites are big deals, a part of our life. I think highly of people like yourselves. It takes a lot of brain power and energy to help people with technical problems. I'm going to accept this as a communication problem and quickly put it behind me. A minor blip on the radar screen and continue to use this forum in the spirit of sharing Thank you for letting me express my thoughts.

Sincerely,

Daniel @ Walk Your Dog With Love .com
