Alan. I am a little confused. Where did you go in the editor to delete remote files? I have been using the editor for years and have never come across this.

You go to the Server tab on the left Janys. If you have the ftp information setup correctly in your Website Project's settings for that site, you will see all the files on the server same as you would an ftp program.

If you've ever downloaded files using the Server tab that's where you can also delete too.
