Category Moving in Pro Version?

I added a suggestion in the "Suggestions for Shopping Cart Creator" thread, but I kinda need to know if this is something that might be added to the Pro version or not as I'm really having a tough time trying to populate my shop knowing that I'm going to have to move it all and redo the descriptions (to edit out item numbers) later. The Item numbers are minor, that will hopefully be something I can just copy and paste from one spot to another?

But.. moving of categories is what I really need to know if this is something that might be possible. I have multiple areas that I will be needing subcategories for and if I put the items just from one of the Main Categories in it will be over 300. All of these items that are actually divided into subcategories will need to be moved intact into the Main Categories when the Pro Version comes and has the Subcategory feature (we're hoping).

Example: I have 4 countries that I will be starting out with (this will grow as time goes) that I will need Main Categories for. Each of these will have numerous subcategories. Right now I can name the categories that are currently able to be added with the main category name in front so I will know what country they belong to.
When Pro comes with the anticipated Subcategory feature, I will want to create a Category for each of these countries and move each of the current categories (which will then be subcategories) into the Main Country's category. I sure hope that makes sense lol.

I am hoping I won't have to Create the New Main Catgories, then Create my dozens of Subcategories, move 300 to 600 plus items one at time into those subcategories, and then end up deleting the categories I currently am adding as they will be empty after moving all the stuff. Would be a whole lot easier to just move them to "be" the subcategories instead.

Any chance of this?

I can't really say yet how that function will fully work as the software is still being worked on. I would hate to commit to some sort of functionality at this point. I will share your comments however with our developers.

Hey Jo Ann. The Butterfly has turned into a Princess - very nice.:)

With regular categories, the product becomes a sub set of that category along the lines of category 2, product id 3. When you introduce sub categories, the product then needs three pieces of information, the category, the sub category and the placeholder within that sub category. You then end up with something along the lines of category 2, subcat 5, product id 4.

Where this all becomes important, is if you submit your current shop to Google etc then add sub categories at a later stage. Let's say you have a product called 'Jo Ann's great gizmo'. The url puts it at category 3, product id 2. When people click on the link for that product in Google etc they get taken to that url. If you currently swap your products around and the placeholder is filled, the customer will just see another of your products instead. However if that address no longer exists then clicking on the product in Google etc will produce a page not found error. Google and other search engine robots periodically crawl sites to re-index pages so when sub categories are introduced that situation will be resolved, although it may take a while. For that reason you need to get your sites in some sort of defined order before you submit to the search engines. :|

Yep thanks for that info Will. I'm not planning to go live until the Pro version is out as I really need the versatility that the features we're all hoping and waiting for will eventually have. I won't be submitting things till after that so it should be good to go. But having said that, it's still good to know how the search engines work with the site changes as I wasn't aware (so much to learn yet lol). Thanks on the avatar comment, it's a few years old but still pretty much me lol. Georgia Renfest, lots of fun :)
