Noticed something strange with shipping

I played around with the cart for a bit and noticed something strange about the shipping fee. The Shipping Total doesn't appear until after a Shipping Destination is selected. After selecting a Shipping Destination, I can change the Shipping Method and the Shipping Total adjusts accordingly. Is this by design?

The odd thing, though, is this only occurs when visiting the cart the first time (when both Shipping Method and Shipping Destination are set to their default "Choose One" option). I tried recreating the error using the same browser by deleting cookies and such but the cart remembered my previous settings and the Shipping Total would work properly. When I switched to a different browser and added an item to the cart, the same error occurred.

I might not be much help. But I believe this is correct, because it has to know these things to properly calculate the shipping and if there are taxes due. I don't think it is an error.

I am curious, did you clear your form data in your browser too. That might be why it is holding info in your browser cache. Many people don't choose to clear out form data, because they do not want to have to retype things in.

To clear form data:
CHROME - Click Wrench Icon, select "Options" link, click "clear browsing data", make sure the "saved form data" is checked. And then in look for the drop down choices for the period to clear data and choose one. I would recommend selecting "everything", just to be on the safe side.

IE - Click "Tools", select "Internet Options" link, Look under the "Browser History" section and click the "delete" button. Make sure that All the boxes are checked except you don't have to on Passwords.

Fire Fox (3.5) - Click "Tools", then select the "Clear Recent History". You should click the "details" button to make sure that all the necessary boxes are checked. You should not need Active logins - I THINK that is passwords? But the site preferences, I am not sure. If it was me I would click that one. That might be what rattles around in the url bar? Not sure. I would also select a time range of everything. Just because it takes out any question of what you cleared out.

I hope that is an easy fix for your situation. Again sorry if this is no help.

Have a great day,

Kim

I thought I posted this in the "Our Swag Shop is Live" topic because I was referring to SCC Pro. Was my post moved? I don't know if SCC Basic has the same problem because I don't use multiple shipping options in my stores. With regard to clearing form data, the answer is yes (everything was cleared). I have my browser options set to remember nothing (form data, cookies, history, etc.).

I just thought it odd that shipping fees would not display until after selecting a shipping destination. If a customer wants to compare shipping fees, they would first have to select a destination. I would have thought shipping fees would display after selecting a shipping method and then taxes would display after selecting a destination. Like I said, this may be the way it also works in the Basic version but I wouldn't know.

With the pro version the user is forced to make a selection, rather than going with the default. The problem with the basic version has always been if the customer doesn't bother to pay attention in the cart, then you can have a situation where you end up chasing for extra shipping charges, which is extremely unprofessional.

The pro version has been purposefully developed to make the customer choose a shipping destination. They cannot proceed with the purchase until they do so. The destination becomes extremely important if you are shipping items internationally, as there can be quite substantial differences in freight costs.

All of the shipping options in the forthcoming pro version are highly user definable and can be configured to suit the exact needs of the shop owner. Tied in with the weight based shipping, it will offer a tremendous amount of flexibility. :)

I think that your post may well have inadvertently been moved, as in the forum it is showing Jo Ann as the thread starter??

Will, I also noticed that Jo Ann is indicated as being the thread starter. That pretty much confirmed that my post was moved.

I understand what you are saying about options being required and that is a needed feature. I just thought the shipping fee would update after selecting the appropriate shipping method. But it doesn't, not until a shipping destination is selected.

It's interesting the way CoffeeCup set up the Shipping Method and Shipping Destination options. Selecting "International" in the Shipping Destination drop-down automatically changes the shipping fee based on the Shipping Method selected.

The way my mind works (when it does, anyway) is I would have looked at Shipping Destination as it affects tax collection, not shipping fees. That is to say, I probably would have set up a Shipping Method of International in addition to the two options already established.

I can see the benefit, however, of setting the destination options as CoffeeCup has since USPS rates will vary based on destination.

The biggest improvement with the whole shipping module for the pro version, has been the introduction of weight based shipping, as most smaller packages get priced on weight and destination by postal services. Without going into too much detail ahead of Scott's official announcement on the feature lists, the weight based shipping module will allow shop owners to deploy a wide range of shipping services, appropriate to the shipping services within their own location. These will be defined by the shop owner themselves in a very easy to use interface. :)

The whole ethos behind the pro version has been to create a more professional feature set, whilst still ensuring it retains its ease of use. All that needs to be done now is for it to get taken 'out of its cupboard' and actually get released. :D
