The checkout page would still be the same as I described above.
If you had the option to configure your country, state, county, city or province and set a % for each, how does that work?
The checkout page would still be the same as I described above.

Scott,
I think that would work for South Carolina.

I'm still setting up the Shopping Cart (SC) and my website so any "adds" are a plus for me.
The use or sales tax issue is pretty important.
I could use what you described. If it could be done quickly by your team, that would be a good holiday gift!
In the meantime-A simple way might be to have the SC setup include a state key where the SC owner could enter the state designator (in my case Minnesota=MN) and the percentage. On the SC page the customer needs to enter the state designator and SC will then add that in to the final cart price.
To get more complex and maybe for a later update before you can get the SC the way you described, SC could account for the fact that some counties and cities have an additional tax. That would need to be determined by zip code. This could be implemented by having the user shoulder the grunt work after the coding allowed it by looking up all possible additional codes for their state and the corresponding zip codes and populating the SC setup.
Just some ideas for you.
Take care, Steve

That should work for us in Canada as well. Purchases made within Canada require 5% GST (Federal tax) + some provinces require an additional PST (Provincial Sales Tax).

Scott,
What you've described as a tax function should work well.
You have my vote to set it up this way.

Yes, I too will buy this product as soon as this feature is available. Until then, it is unusable for me.
Looking forward to seeing an update.
That percentage idea should work ok for us Europeans also I think. I believe there are still differences between the member countries and the percentage option should solve that. We are running at around 20% here in Italy.......
Just thought I'd add that us Australians will have no problem with the tax as we have a flat federal 10% GST (VAT) across all the states. So the shopping cart as it stands is fine.... tax wise.
However if any of the states decide to bring in a local POS tax, then we're buggered. So it would be wise for CoffeeCup to address this isssue, as I can see it IS a problem for many others.

Can you just add a feature that allows the customer to use a drop down box, like in the options upon checkout. The reason i ask is because the business i am building the shop for is in arkansas and that is the only tax that needs to be added. out of state customers do not have to pay taxes. Therefore I will have to setup 2 shops, I for AR and 1 for out of state if the customer cannot choose there tax rate. I hope that made scense. Anyways i like the software and that is the only problem i have had with it so far.
I'm sorry Scott,
Never got an email notification of additions to this thread until today so I thought it "went quiet." In answer to your question, the ability to associate a % rate for tax based on country, state, county, city or province based on shipping location is all we'd need. In most cases it would simply remain zero so it woud also be easy to maintain as well.
With that small add, I could bring the shopping cart for this site online!!!
Thanks!
