electronic signatures

Anybody doing anything with electronic signatures? Our church website is planning to offer religious education registration via their website but need to provide the ability to sign a waiver form for their child.

The legalese for the Electronic Signature Act by design is jibberish and I noticed a ton of companies offering their services to adhere to the ESA for a "modest" fee.

Any suggestions... or anyone currently addressing the issue legally and cost effectively?

I suppose you could use it to collect sigs. The signature part of the form is being brought in by using the new html element. So it's a totally separate app. I'm still working on this. I did the easiest thing and that was to produce an image of the signature which is probably what you want. Right now the image gets over written every time someone signs the agreement.

If you want a real signature, it's pretty impossible to 'draw' that on the screen using a mouse. My signature, when I try, doesn't look anything like my hand written one.
Also, I'm afraid of such signatures being misused. - not by you, of course - but there are creeps out there...

But for engravings, I think it would look more like a real signature if Viv's clients signed a piece of paper, scanned it and sent it as an attachment.

What many people do is add a check box that explains that entering their name and checking this box creates a binding signature to the document etc. etc.

Then add a check box after a signature box that has to be manually checked (not automatically checked by default) and is required.

From there if you are doing a contract, have the results and reply emails both include the entire document contents as well as the signatures etc.

Another way would be to utilize the digital signature of a PDF file instead. But I think the above method should work pretty well.

I agree with you Jo Ann a written signature could be used for identity theft but as you said and the same as acceptance of software the fact that it is stated that if a check box ticked it is proof of contract.

By the way the little one is becoming a bundle of joy. Keep the Avata's coming, nice to watch her grow.
