Hi can anyone help with Meta data, what is the best way to put meta data in to your page. How can some website companies guarantee better search results for websites. Is it just the case of adding words to the beginning of the code or are there tricks? I really want to master meta data and the effect is has on search results.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Karl Williams.

I think it was JoAnn who hit the nail on the head with this question

When she referred to website content as search engine food

A good page heading which matches your key words, and page content which matches both of those is a good start

A url which is relevant, and a page id which is unique to the page content is adviseable also

So if your selling shoes

qualityshoes.com/boystrainers.html : Page title : the place to buy quality shoes and trainers for all occassions : page content containing references to good quality shoes and good quality trainers, by a wholesaler specialising in high class shoes and trainers for children, adults and infants, suppliued by companies such as shoes are us, and the trainer factory, Clarks and Nike and your on the right track

And if you cant get it ranked yourself, its unlikely a website company, or so called seo company can do any better for your website either, better to do it yourself !

Thanks both, that google video and example from viv as really helped Im getting the idea of it and think I know now how to help my site rank higher its add the code and hope for the best :)

Still nagging me through that all these web design companies claim they can do this and offer it as part of the service or an added extra.

The only thing I can think of someone who knows website design adds the meta data to the pages and that classes as website optimisation and if they dont want it they dont add it, they just make it sound much more fancy than what it is on the websites when advertising the service.

Any how thanks again for your help :)

I did google searches using the searches that I want my site to come up on the first page and on top or near the top and the ones that were ranking first second and third I viewed their page source and noted their keywords, meta description, page title, the way they structured their SEO stuff and then I structured mine similar but with my information and now I come up higher than them on the searches I think that the SSD or S- drive helps in the rankings. If you do a google search for: paint contractor jax fl I should come up first or interior house painter contractor atl bch fl I should come out on top with that one too. A result of me working on improving the SEO And they are still trying to sell me SEO services seems to be irrelevant that your site comes up good on the searches they still try to sell it to you anyway.

Eric very true, GregB thats a great tip, thank you will 100% looking at some source code.

My site comes up on page 27 and only can get it by putting in exact words or even the full domain in to the search engine.

Then a guy with an unfinished wordpress site lists first, got to figure out this one its bugging me a bit.

Thanks all for your help.

Karl,

SEO is an area filled with urban legends, rumors and general mystical auras. This is the main reason some companies can get away with charging extra for some rather mundane tasks, simply by calling them fancy names.

You are asking about 'meta data', but that's only part of the larger package of SEO that needs to be addressed comprehensively

You may have done some of these things already but if not, I think you should start by doing the following:

1. Download, read and follow the advice in Google's "Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide" (Google it ;) for a download link).
2. Get a Google Webmaster account.
3. Submit a Sitemap in .xml format to Google.
4. Get a 'Site Verification Code' from Google and include it in in your index page in meta tags as directed.
5. Check your Webmaster account page regularly and pay attention to errors to be corrected, recommendations for improvements, etc.

I think this should get you up from 'Page 27' in search results fairly quickly! ;)

After looking briefly at your site, a couple of things:

I noticed that you have a Google verification code in meta tags, which means you've already done some of what I suggested earlier. :)

Your pages are quite easy for a user to understand and use efficiently, but the lack of descriptive text makes them difficult for a search engine to interpret and make sense of. You may want to consider including at least a couple of sentences of introductory/descriptive text in the beginning of each page.

You should include <meta> descriptions, with key words that are consistent with the content on the page and with the <title>

Use the <title> tags to your advantage and make them descriptive and relevant to each individual page. In the title for your home page, "Welcome to SA31 - Carmarthen Online - www.sa31.co.uk : Home", the only relevant word really is "Carmarthen". The "Welcome to...", the URL and "Home" don't help you at all, rather the opposite I'm afraid. See the Google Guide for more on this...

Also, there is a lot of good pointers on Google's Webmaster help pages!

Hi Per brilliant help, can I ask where you got www.sa31.co.uk from, its a project I worked on last year but have nothing to do with it anymore but I did the core design, because I am not the site owner anymore it should not be linked to me.

You have all given me good stepping stones on what I need to do next, I am getting a much better understanding on the whole thing. I have a few in-active domains which I might make some mock sites with and play with code to see how far I can get them to rank in the search engines :).

Thanks again Per for taking the time to help me, its appreciated :)
