Can anyone tell me if they know a way to display a list on the side or bottom of the calendar of the next 5 upcoming events?

Sorry, that is not possible to do in the CC web calendar.

The web calendar program creates a web page like "mycalendar.html". This page can be modified since it is just a simple web page that contains the code for the calendar (flash or javascript depending on the settings you chose).
Inger is correct that there is no "automatic" way to generate this.
If you want to get your hands dirty with a little coding, you could use "html" markup to create a list of the upcoming events. Of course, this would mean manually changing and updating the web page itself or the "upcoming" links would be old and look out of place.
Depending on how often the events happen, it could be a nice feature, but a lot of work to keep up with.
