A beginner's "Insert a Picture"...

When I click on "Insert" and then "Image" I'm limited to pictures that exist on my computer. Is there any way to specify an URL for the picture, instead.

Right now I simply insert the picture that exists on my computer and then edit the location between the quotation marks inside the <img src> to point to the URL. But I've got to believe there's a better way.

Thanks!

Are we talking HTML Editor here?:)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

Hiya Tom,
What program are you using? Sounds like HTML Editor, but we should be sure to be able to give you the best answer.

Sorry, sorta thrashing around in here.

Yes, it's the HTML Editor I'm asking about. I've got a way to make it work but it seems like folks must be writing HTML when the picture they want to display is already up on the Web someplace.

How is the HTML editor suppose to know where some random image on the web is? If it's an image in your own directory I would agree that if you see it in your own site you should be able to insert as a src. That would make a great suggestion. :)

Yeah other than what Eric says, it is always best to put the images you use on your own server. Not only is it rude to hotlink to other people's files, but it also draws on their bandwidth so be sure you have permission to do so "before" you link to external images on someone elses website (or any other type of files for that matter too).

If you do have permission then yep you will need to code that in there manually.

good for other peoples SEO, not good for your own SEO, just a thought ;)

Ah : JoAnn, you know i have been playing at doing my own SEO

I discovered if you have any image url's that belong in another website, it helps there page ranking.

Also those links which FREE apps conveniently place in your code if your using something like a free photogallery

I dont mind CC urls in my code, in return the CC forum has plenty of my links in forum

But i am convinced removing EVERY URL link which is not belonging to my own website has a benifit

So i would rather use PAID programs like all of mine are CC, then theres only one website link apart from my own

I know its an amatuers opinion, not a professional one, but my page rankings bare out something i am doing works, or maybe something i am not INADVERTANTLY doing is not destroying my ranking.

Ah I see what you mean Viv. Yes I'm sure that "some" things will help other people's page rankings such as image links (which in the end is really a back link to someone's site). What I talked about though is people hot linking which is basically using images on other people's sites without their permission and not something they "want" you doing. Many sites don't allow this or want it as it pulls their bandwidth not yours when someone clicks on it and it can extremely eat their money with over exorbitant bandwidth usage.

Also the other reason for my post is about copyrighted materials. Some images are created by the site owners and aren't meant for people to "take" and they don't want you using their bandwidth either :P

Anyways, most of it is a bandwidth issue as well as the permissions to do so. Not something you should just do because you don't want the images on your own site type of thing :)
