Adwords and Analytics - a sign of...

Re: http://ColoradoProcessServers.net

I know this isn't directly relevant to CoffeeCup topics, but beg your indulgence, if anyone is familiar with Adwords and Analytics?

We typically get about 50% conversions with our site - that is, about half the people who actually visit it, book work with us. That changed recently, after people kept suggesting that I simplify the home page and I did, and all the designers and colleagues who were suggesting it, said it's great now. But not our traffic or conversion to actual business rate.

For one thing, since doing this, it's almost like people stopped searching for our Adwords keywords, because we rarely even spend the budget anymore, and that very rarely used to happen. I mean, I've been using Adwords for years, so successfully before, that we canceled our Dex Yellow Pages ad in January and were doing just fine with Adwords.

Then in early July, things really dropped off badly, and have been rather odd since then. We've been very slow, then we get a week like last week, when things go gangbusters all of a sudden, and drop back to very slow like they did this week. I simplified the site but don't think that's the reason, because on the slow weeks, we get like 5 visits a day.

So there are two things going on here. The apparent lack of people searching for the keyword sets in Adwords, that they always have searched for, AND the fact that we used to get 50% conversions from those who did visit, and now we don't. One example is that, today we had 5 clicks from our Adwords, but no service bookings.

But here's the part that has me concerned about Adwords, and whether their count is trustworthy?
I look at Analytics and it shows for today, that 14 people went to our domain and visited the / root of it, BUT only 1 visit is recorded to the /index.html at the domain and NO other page views there, like the various other pages at the site.

What is that indicative of? Robots that just ding the root but don't even visit the index page, and we're getting charged for it?

I asked them about this 2 days ago but no answers yet.

But if I could identify the causes of these mysteries ( why we have almost no business for weeks, then a gangbuster week, why it seems like on the slow weeks, no one is even searching for our Adwords keyword terms, and why our conversion rate has drastically fallen like it has ) then it would be great to figure how to get all our weeks to be like that gangbuster one.

But I've been hearing rumors lately, from colleagues, that Google has been messing up their algorithms lately. Has anyone else heard that? That could account for a LOT of this?!

Here's a fresh update of what I was talking about. How can there be 16 page views in the root directory, yet only 1 of the index.html ?

Google messes with there algorithms daily...

It could be your ad in the Yellow pages. I just got my new phone book about a month ago and threw out the old one as I always do. This may be something that is contributing to it.

Maybe you need to check your competitors to see what they are using for KeyWords and compair to what you have.

We must always change, that is the beauty of Web Design. :D

Like I said, we haven't had a yellow page ad since last year, Adam.

I pretty much know the keyword sets and they've worked for years for us.

If you were selling HP Printers, the keyword sets wouldn't suddenly change for that. :)

Have you checked your prices to see if they are competitive? Because frankly that is what I care about when looking or a service. You both can get the job done, the cheaper the better...

Yes Adam, I'm competitive for good experienced servers. If anyone doesn't appreciate that, they can look for cheap.

We discussed this in another thread.

The President of our state organization says our fees are fine.

This aint like buying a TV set with the same model number, where you just shop for the cheapest. If someone does that, they usually just go to the sheriff, who is the cheapest and rarely gets the job done right.

On this site I reviewed it or the view pg source of it and this was my findings:

http://www.PlanetaryBillOfRights.org/

You hardly have any key words listed whatsoever. You need to add lots of more relevant to the topic key words like five times as many. You need to take the one image you have on the page and put in alternate text and repeat in the alternate text of that image many of the words that you have listed as keywords and too new keywords you add. You need to add another image or two to the page and further add to the repetition of the keywords with more image alternate text listings.
Make sure that your xml sitemap that is submitted to the search engines and up on the source file is current.
resubmit your home pg and linked urls to google index. If you have any goggle search error listings endeavor to fix them, pgs that cannot be found or read.
make sure that Google can read your site and that you have not received a message that the site is currently not available. Needs to be a current property account and available to the bots with the proper account codes or verify ownership codes or all of the above. when Google says to do things to improve SEO they usually say you can do all of the suggestions they list like five things you can do and then say you can do them all I have found that the more you do the more likely it is that you will get better rankings For instance their ways of registering/ identifying canonical pages

Is your analytic script suppose to be in the head or body of the page? You have it in the head on one site and in the body on the other.

I noticed a few / visits to my site this week also and was wondering about that myself
