I'm very new to web design. I know how to use WYSIWYG's fairly well (such as Artisteer), but I have never actually designed a website using any form of coding. I'm interested in learning how to do this. Are there any places on the internet where I could take some online courses (preferably free). I would like to learn HTML5, CSS3, Php, Java Script etc... enough so that I could do some decent work. Are there also any books geared toward newbies that anyone could recommend as well?

Just looking for someone knowledgeable enough to point me in the right direction.

Although w3schools has a lot of great information, and does have some tutorials, I personally don't think they are the best way to "start" learning, more of a resource once you've learned some things. Not the greatest tutorials really, they lack quite a bit of information for tutorial setups.

If you do a google search though for:

HTML Tutorials Free

and

CSS Tutorials Free

you will find a lot of places that will offer free tutorials. I've found some of the best places are books myself. CSS3: The Missing Manual is a very good book that teaches both CSS2 and CSS3 at the same time. HTML you'll need HTML and HTML5 once you have a good latch on HTML. Those books are pretty much all over the place, but the Missing Manual series of books is pretty good for that too.

What does this have to do with Design & Content Reviews?

Maybe we need one place to dump all the book and tutorial suggestions that keep getting repeated around the various forums.

Tutorials are good but prevent you from paddling in the web design soup. Get your fingers dirty. Make mistakes then read up how to fix them

I totally disagree Prism, that's what causes us to have to answer 5 million questions when they don't know how to fix it because they didn't learn a thing first.
