What DOCTYPE should I declare?

I have just started using CoffeeCup as I changed machines and my much loved HotDog was no longer supported. Now I find spurious characters appearing in my preview of pages. From a little reading, it seems that my existing DOCTYPE declaration is no longer doing what I want it to. I was using <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> . What should I use now?

It might be your character set.

If you now have a W7 machine and it was XP software, you could always install MS Virtual Machine and still run the old XP stuff.

No need for that. The CC programmes have been updated and upgraded along with the Windows versions. I'm successfully running most of them on W8.

Yep same here, haven't had any issues (well program running issues lol) with any of the CC software so far. Most of the time if there's an issue running it, changing the Compatibility settings to Run as Administrator will fix it. Other than that everything has worked out of the box and I've actually not had to set a single thing to Administrator in Windows 8 :)
