I have just installed Coffee cup on windows 7 as I move from my old XP / Dreamweaver8 setup. I have existing websites that I want to connect to but am cautious about what might happen with synching against an empty project folder ! All your processes seem to assume that the user first creates a website then uploads it. What I want is to connect to an existing website and to carry on from there. Surely I cant be the first to want to do this ? Chris M

Hiya Chris,

I guess the first thing we need to know so we don't assume is what program it is you installed. CoffeeCup has many software programs, but I'm assuming it's either the HTML Editor or Visual Site Designer. If it's VSD then there is nothing you can do unless you made that website in VSD to start with as it cannot sync with sites it didn't create. If it's HTML Editor and you're worried, just back up your website first in a safe place and then sync it and see what happens. The setups in HTML Editor usually work pretty nicely so it should all be good. Doesn't matter if you have the website local or not yet, just create the location on your computer that you want to be your project's location and then setup the FTP stuff in HTML Editor and you should be set to go.

Jo Ann, thanks for the feedback. However, as I have dumped my old XP system and the FTP program it had, I am looking for an FTP client. Is there one on your site I can use to do the backup. (I tried getting Filezilla from Sourcefourge but as usual, found the download infected with spyware so took it off.)

Try the CoffeeCup Direct FTP, it zips and downloads the whole lot for you from the server.

Thanks, I have setup the FTP and now trying the Editor, but can't get it to FTP upload automatically when I save the file locally. I got used to this on my old editor, so to set this up in the same way would be helpful - and ensuring local and website are in sych. Otherwise if I edit a number of pages I risk being unsure what will be in need of uploading later. (Also, as I am writing .php code local browser viewing is of no use as need to use data on a test site to see what is going on.)

And similarly, I am looking to sort the list of files into descending date order - as opposed to alphabetically - i.e. with the files I have just worked on at the top. (Again this is what I have been used to doing and it helps ensure I keep working on the correct file.)

I don't believe that the HTML Editor has a sync capability unless you are hosting with CoffeeCup's S-Drive, and even then I think it's an all or nothing thing for syncing. I just briefly went through the settings and couldn't find any way to set that up so I don't think it has that feature. The easiest way to do this is to upload when you change things, usually when you build websites you do this regularly for testing anyways so it shouldn't be that hard to work out doing that. Syncing is nice, but it's not a deal breaker when so many other features are in there for most people.

In order to preview anything in PHP and some script languages also, you'll need to set up a local server to do that. Someone else will need to chime in here as I have no idea how to do that myself yet

I also see no way to order the files and folders to sort them other than alphabetical. Works fine for the most part, if you give it a trial spin for a bit to see if it's something you can get used to or not. The HTML Editor is a pretty nice program for the price so quite a few people use it without having too many problems with the above situations.

To preview php files, you can either install server software (WAMP, XAMP, MAMP etc) locally on your machine, or you can create a test folder in your domain and upload and preview there. I'm using WAMP locally. It has apache, cpanel, php mysql and all you need, and it it easy to set up.
The built-in ftp in the html Editor is ok for uploading, but as far as I know you will need a standalone FTP client to be able to back up your site. That's why I recommended Direct FTP.

I want to use CC-html-Editor to change some things. (I have no idea
if S-drive night be easier).

Since my site on my desk is garbled, I tried to go as follows:
1) at www I made a zip-file of the site then downloaded the zip to
my desk then opened it into a clean drive. So I have a complete code at
www and a complete code on my desk.
2) Next I tried to built a CC-Project. Doing that I got something but it seems
my "address of desk files" put in an intermediate folder.

Can anyone help me with this.

If you are afraid of messing up the code of the site, make a copy of it and experiment with that instead of the 'real' pages.

This might sound obvious but did you unzip the downloaded file yet?
