This is in reference to the posting started by highmarcs. I had the exact problem he mentioned when I built a site two years ago using VSD 5.4, in which the site looked good on my PC and all screwed up on a computer that had different settings or a different browser. I did work with CoffeeCup tech support at the time, and they certainly tried to help. I believe the problem was that some browsers were set for a much smaller resolution and the page width that I was using wouldn't fit. Also, the default text size might be larger than I was using. Since objects were set at specific x-y coordinates, there were overlaps of text and graphics.
I solved my problem by learning to code HTML pages from scratch, putting everything into tables, with columns assigned space by percentages. The page might look weird on those PCs that were causing the problems, but at least everything was readable. As an added bonus, I learned a new language, which was more fun than doing graphics.
BUT, this was not an ideal solution. Every requested change has been a lengthy chore instead of a quick fix, sometimes requiring repeated tests because I can't see the page I'm working on when it's just HTML code. And now that I've just been told I need to design several websites, I really want to give VSD another shot. In fact, since the boss is asking for movable cartoon characters, I don't think I can do this without some sort of WYSIWYG tool.
So, if I upgrade to the current version of VSD (5.8?), will the website I create display correctly on all computers?
Is VSD better (as opposed to...

Not sure if you will get an exact answer to this. Maybe you should ask tech support directly. Our answers in this forum will be subjective.
As for my input, I hand code all my web pages (no wysiwyg editors involved) and I still can't guarantee that my pages will look the same on all computers. I.E. browser has what's called "quirks mode" that it uses if it finds code that it doesn't think is "standard", yet is will display non standard code more than most other browsers.
I think the newest VSD is way more advanced than it was even a couple of years ago (yes, I do have it and test it out from time to time, and recommend it to customers who want to take control of their own websites).
If you don't already own VSD, then download the free trial and give it a go. If it gives you the results you want, great. If not, no money lost.
If you already had the program, then you have free upgrades, right? Download the upgrade, try it out. You don't have to build 50 web pages before you test it, and some web services let you see screenshots of what your pages will look like in different browsers...I'm sure a quick google search should find something called 'browsershots' ? or something like that.

Bev,
When you hand code HTML, you save an HTML file to your computer. If you open that file, it will display in your browser, and you can use the right click "open with" to use multiple browsers, and see everything before you publish to the web.
