Transfering a VSD site from XP to...

I am currently designing a site on VSD that is composed of 300 pages. The larger the site becomes, the more difficult it is becoming to save, preview and work with the program, the site will approach 1000 pages by completion. I am considering purchasing a new laptop to handle the size and needs of the site, but I am wondering if I will be able to move the information that I have created on my current XP system over to a new Vista system. Tech support suggested that you can't move a VSD site between systems, but I have successfully transfered my files between my laptop and desktop, with seemingly no problems (both run on XP though). Has anyone attempted a transfer like this, is it possible and what should I look for in a new system for efficient use with a very large site. I currently have a Dell XPS/M140-1.73GHz, 504 MB RAM, 60 GB. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm bumping this post, hoping to get a reply. I have since found out that VSD has been successfully transfered to and from systems running on XP, but I still haven't come across anyone that has switched from XP to Vista. Additionally, I have found a suitable system to handle the workload, my current system just doesn't have the available RAM or fsb to handle large applications. If anyone can help out I would really appreciate it.

Kevan,

I recently read something here in this forum about some of the issues associated with moving to Vista. Since I do not have VISTA and will NOT have Vista on my machines until MS fixes the issues, I have no experience.

I can tell you that if you have all the images you used with VSD in a folder with your VSD files, it is more likely to transfer. VSD looks for the images in the same relative location as they were before. So if your current system is working and your move some images, you will need to help VSD find the images, and if you have many images, it may take some effort to get them all re-located.

If your VSD files and images are all found as sub-folders of your VSD files folder, you will have a much better chance of a successful move.

Hi Bill,
Thank you for taking the time to reply. From what your suggesting, moving the files from XP to Vista would be the same process as from XP to XP. As I mentioned, I have moved my files from system to system before, so I found out the hard way that you have to keep your files together. I have had reservations about going over to Vista myself, but I decided to take up the challenge. Since you're still using XP, I will update this thread at a later time to let you know what my experiences are with the transfer and Vista in general. Thank you again for your time.

Hi Kevan,

We just bought a lap top with Vista and didn't have any problems installing CoffeeCup software. They open and work fine, just like with XP.
I believed I transfer all my website files since I keep them in the same folder... but I just realized that when I want to preview my web site in VSD, my contact form and gallery created on Web Form Builder and Photo Gallery don't show at all! The weird part is that when I open them with their respective programs they show up there. So I saved them just in case, right?
So far, I have tried deleting the objects on VSD; save and close. Then I open it again and insert the objects but not luck, yet :(
I'll keep looking for a suggestion on how to solve this issue.
I just wanted to let you know my recent experience.

Hi Kevan,

1000 pages is far too much for VSD to handle, even if you upgrade too a more powerful Vista system. Even 100 pages in a single VSD file would be a major and cumbersome task to maintain! I advise you to split up the site in logical sections (each of them being a seperate site) with no more than about 25 pages, and make a sort of 'portal site' from which each different section can be loaded, the 'home' button of each section going to the homepage of the portal site. If you organize it this way each and every section can be loaded, saved and maintained easily. I did this several time myself with sites that became too large. Working this way you could spend your money on other things than upgrading to Vista (I would never do this: wait for Windows 7 and stick to XP now). I hope I'm clear enough, if not I'll draw a chart telling what I mean.

Just some info for people going from XP to Vista.
The directory structure is different meaning my documents/my pictures has a different path to follow on an vista system.
If you find that vsd does not find certain files trying saving them in a subdirectory that has your vsd data files and then open vsd. At this point you may have to relink the doc or pic or form from within vsd. But at least it will all be there using the same path that vsd will use to find your other files.
Of course you can this before moving from xp saving vsd with the update links and then transferring which then would cause no issues.

Hope this helps,
Bryan
