What's ffdshow and what do I do with...

Hmm. how odd.

In overview, VSD can't play media clips by itself, it has nothing to do with that. When you are previewing a page it's using a basic browser. Whatever is used, the browser that calls up your HTML page has to have some sort of plug-in or other device installed to play media, unless you supply one yourself such as the CC Jukebox. What I think is happening is the preview browser, told to play an audio clip, is trying to call up what it has defined as the default player for mp3, which just happens to be ffdshow. The issue you've been happening is outside the scope of VSD, and into the realm of browsers-playing-media.

But if you can navigate to where VSD is exporting the HTML pages, and open them with your test browsers without problem, then the issue is just how VSD is trying to preview them. In either case the issue is the software being called to handle the mp3.

Hopefully that makes some sort of sense.

I have had the software try to load when I use webcam and/or CC's video software.

Eric, when does it try to load it, though? When you're working with the files, or when you try to preview a page where they're embedded?

right when I click on the program to open it. So before I have even tried to do anything with the program. I double click on, say, CC's webcam program, as the program is loading to open the ffdshow program pops up asking if I would like to use it on this time around or later. I always select later because I dont know what it is.

This might help though. When I was doing a site a few months back using expressions and I inserted a silverlight video clip the same ffdshow program popped up asking me the same questions.

Odd. Well, it might be useful to contact CC's tech folks and ask them whether they're using ffdshow as a media vehicle, similar to how they're using swfobject for enabling their Flash.

Spinny,

If you read the text on the top of the ffdshow dialog box, it specifically says that "vsd.exe" is calling ffdshow. My default web browser is IE. But Preview is set to use VSD's built-in browser, whatever that is. I suspect it's also IE, but I can't be sure.

I just did another test to see if I could get ffdshow to come back again. I closed my website and reopened it without exiting VSD. Then I did another preview and, voila, ffdshow has returned! When I changed the preview browser to the Default browser (which is IE 7), VSD processed the website and and transferred control to a new tab in IE7, but ffdshow did not appear! So, this is definitely an internal VSD issue.

Yeah, Tom, looks like you're right. I really think it's a job for tech support.

Sorry, this one slipped past me. We only use ffdshow as an optional companion product with our Web Video Recorder program. It is not used in any other way by any other product of ours. From what I read here so far, I think you some how associated that binary with something else. Have you tried going into the control panel and uninstalling it?

Hi Scott,

Thanks for checking in! No, I haven't tried that. I didn't know I could "uninstall" it because I don't ever remember "installing" it. But I'll check into it and get back to you.

Scott,

I checked in the Control Panel and I even clicked on the "Add Programs" icon, but ffdshow is nowhere to be found! So, I guess I can't "uninstall" it.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
