This was in fact a bug.
New version released today which solves the problem.

It's behaving for me now. The directory tree populates correctly and connection issues seem to be resolved.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

The server error log and access log can also provide clues as to what is causing the problem.
PHP
During normal operation, PHP error reporting and logging features are usually disabled. This is a good security practice, but it makes diagnosing problems more difficult. To see what is happening behind the scenes, you can temporarily enable the following features.
Error reporting
When you enable error reporting in PHP, error messages are displayed on the page. While this is an obvious security risk, it can also provide valuable information when you are trying to find the cause of a problem.
The server error log and access log can also provide clues as to what is causing the problem.
