I have just been given information from a friend that should let me update their website. They had someone in the office that put it online Fall of 2007, and then did not update it again. (It took too long to upload the entire site for a simple change using MS Publisher).

I have rewritten a couple of the pages using the HTML editor, and setting up style sheets. I think things will load faster.

The information I have is:

Website #

Login: (looks like a user name)

Hosting Password:

Server IP Address:

I also have the website URL.

"The remote server denied login" is the message I get with using the URL in the server box. I have also tried the IP address.

Any suggestions on how I should connect?

Hi Bill,
as I mentioned that for my godaddy account, was my url without the http or www. I also had nothing in the Intial Host Folder slot. But upon doing some thinking, I am wondering this. I have 2 sign on names, one is for the login to my account and one is for my domain, could this be he sent you the account info instead of domian info?
I am also able to use the account info and use the ftp there for mywebsite.
Have you tried using Filezilla or Direct ftp for uploading? yeah I know! lol

Bruce,

Turned out to be a password problem. They emailed me all the information, then in a follow-up email, gave me a new password. I finally realized who I was dealing with (someone I once worked with) and went back to the original message and tried that password. I suspect the password to the account controls is what got changed since I doubt she has any idea about FTP.

I know that eventually she wants to be the one updating the site (after I get the thing rewritten), but I don't think she will ever want to learn how to write html. I have started looking at Joomla! and if I can get it setup, I may have found a way she can keep the site up-to-date.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
