that the file has changed. All I did was double click the file in the left pane to open it in the program. It opens then the program seemingly makes a change to the file. I have no idea what changed. I can press Ctrl-Z and nothing changes. The program does not remove the asterisk.

These are most likely caused by some hidden characters. If you save it once and then re-open that same file, it should remove the *.
