I have used the editor for years for HTML and CSS.

I now need to do some PHP is the editor good for that?

I have tried it but did not find it intuitive. But may be me my PHP is not good.

I use the Editor for PHP a lot. PHP is like a lot of scripting languages, using it you learn, not using it you forget.
PHP is a very user dependent scripting language but I've used it on some login scripts, Paypal API's, and some online apps. What kind of intuitiveness is it lacking? Might be a great suggestion.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

When I start typing I am looking for the complete word to come up so I can click on it.

It does sometimes but not very often.

Is the only way to use it - by clicking on the code in left hand column?

But as I said my ability with PHP is limited

At present I am trying a Contact Form for WP.

I've never relied on the auto complete for my coding. When I started I didn't know what scripts I needed so when I did searches it became easier for me to type the needed code by hand.

Well, provided that you have some server software installed...
