Random freezing (HTML Editor, Vista)...

Good day. I've been using the trial of HTML Editor for a couple days now and it seems to randomly stop responding while I'm working. I wish I could give you more information, but there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to when it freezes. I'm using version 2008 build 242 under Windows Vista Home Premium. The first occurrence was immediately upon opening the dialog window for "new file from layout". After manually shutting the program down and restarting I was able to use a layout, but then it froze again a few minutes into typing on the page. I've also had it freeze when opening the in-program page preview. Always five or so minutes into running the program regardless of my actions. Any suggestions?

Have you tried right clicking the program link and choose "run as administrator"? Do you have the Vista User Account Control turned off, and last but not least, did you shut of Norton or any other virus scanner/internet security software before installing?

Way ahead of you on User Account Annoyance. Run as admin seemed to have no effect. As far as security software (in my case AVG Anti-virus and Spybot) I will try reinstalling with those disabled.

[EDIT] Curiously enough, it unfroze while I was typing this message. I'll keep trying.

[EDIT 2] Looks like it unfreezes itself if I wait a minute. Still rather annoying but at least I know I can get work done with patience. I'll still try reinstalling when I have a moment.

How about running the task manager's performance tab, or applications. You might find that some other resource hogging program or task is running at the same time as the freezes. I think there should be a "resource monitor" button that will help you track what resources are being used. Sounds like maybe your computer is out of memory or some momory hungry program is running in the background.
If you find out that it's a program that runs on startup, and you want to stop it, under your 'start/windows', 'all programs', 'accessories', 'run', you can type in msconfig.exe then OK. That will launch the System Configuration utility. In the Startup tab, there will be a list of programs. The ones with checkmarks run on startup. Most of these can be safetly turned off, but I suggest only unchecking any that show up as hogging resources and slowing down your computer. You may have to take extra steps when rebooting for the first time, like a checkmark in the "dont show me this again" window that tells you about the changes you made.....

Don't take my word for it. Use the windows help file and google msconfig if you are not used to using it. Don't make any hasty changes. I'm only trying to cover some possibilities. Make a system checkpoint before making any big changes, and you can always just go back and put the checkmarks back in if you really needed the program to run on startup...

Good Luck, and let us know if any of this was helpfull.

Thanks for your advice, however recently the problem seems to have ceased. I've considered what I may have done different, but honestly I can't think of anything that has changed. I'm just going to chalk it up to miscellaneous Windows bugs until it happens again and/or I can find a potential reason for it.

I should hope memory isn't a problem. This is a brand new computer and I spent an entire day removing all the garbage that OEMs like to include with new systems. I see nothing starting up that I didn't explicitly allow to do so, but if the program starts freezing again I see a couple here that I can do without running.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
