I would like my editor to have white or yellow text on a black background. Thanks for any help.

You can change that in Tools -> Preferences -> Customization and click on the longish button with the text 'modify highlighter colors...' etc.

Thanks Inger for your prompt and completely helpful response. Sadly it turns out that just using these settings is not enough. The regular text looks fine but a lot of color coded text is unreadable. I suppose I can alter those settings as well but I'll probably just live with black on white. Unless someone has done that and would like to share a color scheme.

You can change all the colours if you want. I prefer the default, so I think you'll just have to experiment.
