From the Bootstrap website, this shows a jumbotron. It is the grey area of the screen with Hello World and the button.

And this is a narrow jumbotron:

And the beauty is that you can also add a background-image, which makes it visually more appealing.
The perfection isn't reached in one pass.

Sorry, this might sound thick, but I don't really care as I have stuff I need to do, and one of them is learning this tool. I'm totally new to web development. I was a product developer in the 90's [C/C++/Java/ect..] for over ten years. I know HTML, and I've started learning CSS, and I've never in my life seen or heard the term "Hero Unit" until I bought RLM. I've gone through this thread, and I'm still no closer to discovering what a "Hero Unit" is, and what it's used for.

Is it a design element? An active element like a button that's part of a design? Why is it a hero? What's so heroic about it?

Is it because it jumps ind and save your arse in some way by being flexible? By highlighting something?

Would it be possible to get an answer in the form "A hero unit is..." or ."A unit becomes hero when x is used as y"

At the moment I basically get how the layout maker works [except for this], and please tell me if I'm wrong because it's why I'm here].

You visually create a layout based on a grid [Like 960gs grid but more flexible] with columns and rows which is dynamic in nature in that it will rearrange itself when it gets to a certain size so it can be used on devices like tablets and phones. You place elements in those rows, creating containers to house groups of elements. When you've created the wire frame you output a style sheet that you include in your HTML, and use the Classes, Ids, and Types in your code to define the layout of your page as an when needed by elements of the page.

Please correct me if I have anything wrong here.

So my question is "What is and how and when do I use a "Hero Unit"?

Also is there a manual, or a source information? Everything I've seen seems to be marketing material, is there anything that actually gives you the basics of using this tool?

Thanks

Barry

@Scott Swedorski: OK, sorry! Just saw the text at the top of your post. The definition isn't immediately clear [visually, not logically]. Mighty be an idea to just post the text under the image so you don't get a thousand more of these.

What does the term "hero" mean and why was it used to name a site/page's ?

The term "hero" is used by movie/television prop designers; a "hero prop" is the one built for closeups. It's got the most detail, and is most realistic. It's the best version of a prop, the most important one.

I have always assumed that where they got the term from.

It could be presentation of your website, it could be advertising of your site, it could be key content on your site.

If you guys could remember when building flash website was on trend we had an " Intro" before we see full content of flash website, I put the term of " Hero Unit " as an intro of website or an introduction of a webpage.

I now believe I know what a hero unit is, I can see it being useful in the right conditions.

The amazing thing about this Forum and well, CoffeCup website....it is assumed you have great knowledge of what the tools are supposed to do and what it is you need to do. If you read the posts in just this thread there are several people saying they don't know and the replies they get are like Well a hero unit is a hero unit and it is used as a hero unit.

Once had a teacher say "You can't define a word by using that word in the definition." Tutorials help only when you reach the level of the tutee's expertise. Then you can bring them up to the level you are tutoring about.

Now granted there are experienced persons that have been doing this work by hand for a while. There are also people that are just starting or intermediate in their knowledge. Seems CoffeeCup would desire to make videos, tutorials, and help structured to reach someone new, intermediate or advanced and seeking to buy a tool as well as use it.

Just some thoughts (more for CoffeeCup). I am slowly figuring the tools out and have bought a couple that I don't need because of lacking knowledge and expertise on my part as well as Coffeecup. I am working on mine and hopefully, Coffeecup will work on theirs. I think it might mean more sales and word of mouth recommendations.

I understand what you want to say. Please be advised that this is a user forum, and any help/tutoring given here is done by users, in their spare time and out of a wish to be helpful. I don't think many of us have made a degree in tutoring, we write as we understand what things are and how they are working, and it seems oftentimes to be understood.

If you want to reach the CoffeeCup staff with your remarks, it's best doing that in a support ticket (click on your name top right on this page).

As to the hero unit, it's a block of text mainly, and can be used to hold a heading or something else that is important and needs to stick out from the rest of the page. The name 'Hero Unit' has not been invented by CoffeeCup.
