When I configured the Google maps I chose custom and used 960 x 400...but the finished product looks way bigger...did I mess up the layout somewhere? Even if I change the html manually it doesn't change??

This is because you are making the map 100% wide. Which means it will take up the entire column. If you wanted to reduce the size, you would need to place it in a container and set the width of the container to the size you want it to display.
