several issues:

1. I don't get an image for the categories as pictured on the designer version even with featured items.

2. Thumbnail sizing on the web page: when I adjust the thumbnail sizing how do i get rid of the white space? I'd like the images to appear closer together like photo gallery like with pricing and image name only; when i resize the thumbnail its makes the actual picture thumbnail so small. I changed the padding to move the pricing text to the left, but the space is still there.>> would publishing as a catalog vs shop have anything to do with this? if not was does that feature achieve?

3. Is there anyway to only have categories viewed on home page with only its photo?

Take a look at the margin and padding settings in the Subcategory Tile Properties- Advanced tab.

(1) double click on the categorie bar to open up the page where you can add some description, the option to add a picture will be there

(2) thumbnail picture needs to be square ie 500 x 500 then there should be no space, if however you are editing with a picture placed when the thumbnail size was smaller, you will need to remove the picture and replace it with an original bigger one as the program reduced it.

When adding multiple picture per one listing insure thay are all exactly the same size, to prevent the slide show going bigger and smaller.

To be more specific:
I don't mean the white space in my image. In order to get the price and buy tags below the image thumbnail, i adjusted the padding to push the price down and the left. leaving white space in the product thumbnil. I would like the rest of the space between the next product to be smaller.

Or is there a way to move the price to the bottom center of the image without adjusting the top padding?

2. is the "what i really want" image achievable? to just display categories? if not, do i try to build this thing in the extra page we have that is blank?

You could change the settings in SCCP to not have anything displayed on your home page then hand code the look your after.
