Don't use the alt-key to enter in text, just type or paste in what you want to write.

What Nicola is referring to is the character map. The extended ASCII characters that are not on the keyboard (128-255 decimal). These can be displayed in many applications by pressing the ALT key plus a corresponding ASCII decimal code. Or using the Character Map Application within Windows. There is no other way of getting these codes into your document. (unless your application has something like; "Insert Symbol").

So let's say you want to write a recipe for roast beef and you are trying to tell what temperature to set the oven. How do you do "Degree" symbol without typing out the word degree?

You use the character map. I can never remember where it is found on your computer, so I just type "character map" in the search box of my computer and it gives you a link to the application. Once you have it up, find the symbol you want and you should be able to click on it, click Copy and it puts it into your clipboard, then you can paste it into your document. Here is the degree mark: °

Attached is what the character map app looks like.

Do you have the HTML Editor? If so you can just load up any project or page and on the right hand side go to the Characters tab and find what you're looking for there. Double click the one you want and have it enter it on the open page (can be a blank page cuz you just want the code). Then copy that code and put it into your page using the HTML Tool. That should work if I'm understanding you correctly.

If you have MS Word:
Open a blank document
Type "(C)" without quotes. It should change to the copyright symbol.
Select and Copy the symbol.
Place it in the text box where you want it by pasting.

This should work for other special characters as well.
