Something bad has happened to my computer! I have no idea what has happened!
I was just doing my thing in FireFox & all of a sudden this thing called Antivirus Vista window pops up and starts scanning automatically. I've NEVER used this before. I use Norton Internet Security. So I clicked the stop button and it prompted me to register. I said no & then I did a Google on how to disable this thing called antivirus Vista & found the instructions.

Go to control panel, click Security, and click Security Center..and....well, that's as far as I got because I got one of those RunDLL error windows! I freaking panicked! So here I am again in need of serious help.

Here are all the different error windows that have popped up on my desktop, most of which come from when I try to access my Security Center in the Control Panel, but I think a couple of them popped up when I rebooted - this can't be good:

Please, someone tell me I haven't screwed something up! I really didn't do anything...it kinda just happened!

Ok I just noticed something else very odd.

This window opened automatically when I rebooted - and it's still open so I took a screen shot:

So it's like, my Security Center is open, but I can't get it to open thru the control panel - very odd.

Okay so in that window in the image above, I clicked "Internet Options" on the left and THIS window popped up:

What in the world? I've NEVER had anything like this happen.

Is this some kind of trick or virus or something? I haven't clicked anything in the Alert window. Should I click click yes to block it or will that make things worse.

Oh man I am so freaking out.

OH, so of course I am running a full scan w/Norton Security - takes a bit to run the whole thing so I minimized it, but I just checked the status - still scanning, but it found this:

Trojan.faceAV

OH SNAP! Gonna get rid of it asap!

Oh thank God! I got rid of that trojan thing - it was Trojan.faceAV or Trojan.fakeAV, can't remember, but got rid of it and I can now access my security center in my control panel.

Darn trojan thingies messin' w/me!

How do you get those? I have never had a virus or Trojan on my system ever.

lol, Trojans.. I fixed a guys computer once because it would not boot.. It had 45 viruses and 8 trojans in it..

Antivirus Vista is no doubt related to the notorious Antivirus XP 2008, Antivirus XP 2009 and others. I worked on a machine infested with Antivirus XP 2008, and it was the nastiest cleanup I ever did -- and I've done a LOT of 'em for people.

Go ahead with your virus scan with Norton, but don't stop there. You should also check with other tools, such as the free version of MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, available from http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php. No single tool effectively detects all the bad stuff, so you're well-advised to employ more than one. Also, it's often advised that you run antivirus and anti-rootkit tools in Safe Mode.

And another thing: After you've convinced yourself that your system is clean and running properly, turn off System Restore and then turn it back on. Some of these baddies can live inside 'Restore Points' and come back to life. It's best to delete the Restore Points to prevent this from happening.

Caveat: I don't have much experience with Vista -- most of my experience is with XP.

P.S. Here are two articles about Antivirus Vista -- there are probably many more, but you have to be careful even with this type of article. Some advise you to download automatic tools that will detect the rogue software, but require you to purchase their product to eradicate it.

Don't you just find it easier to format once that level of infection occurs? It seems in the time it takes to clean a system, a format would be so much faster. Of course I like to format if there is a full moon
