I still personally never use one nor ever plan to. In my opinion they cause far more issues then they are supposed to prevent. If you use FireFox for browsing and a Web based e-mail program, you can eliminate just about all virus threats.

Still, there was an interesting article on Maximum PC here at http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/kill that had reviews of the top 10 most popular ones. I am surprised they did not include CA Antivirus. That I would have rated around a 2. ;)

that ESET Smart Security remains a favorite, that the free Microsoft Security Essentials is a great solution for cheapskates, that McAfee has redeemed itself, and that Trend Micro Internet Security Pro just plain sucks.

and the version of NOD that i have DOES do IM Scanning too (says no in their reviews) - so it gets to go up the list one to err - oh - to first again :P

A little disappointed that Kaspersky wasn't on the list.

I use Norton and have to say that it seems to have speeded up in the past couple of versions. And I don't seem to have the conflicts that it used to create, thank goodness.

Microsoft Security Essentials has been doing great on my laptop and my Dads. And it is free so I guess I am a cheapskate :)

True. Kaspersky is always rated as a top performer. Must not be a corporate sponsor. :D

After having issues with McAfee (memory hog, extensive permission issues etc.. ) I switched to AVG. I have been using AVG (free) for the last 2 years and has worked very well for me. I am surprised that it is not in this list. A combination of Zonealarm firewall and AVG works well.

The Maximum PC researched these
Norton, ESET , Avira, MSE , McAfee , Trend Micro, BitDefender, Panda, Comodo, Avast

Was running Norton under Vista, gave me so many problems and was so invasive i trashed it in favor of Microsoft Essentials. PC running faster, no problems, nothing strange happening like under Norton. I also have Spyware Doctor to get rid of that malware. McAfee worked well also but MS Essentials was cheaper (i.e free)..
