Now THIS is interesting Jim!

If you have already got a Google Webmaster Account, check the Optimization / Content Keywords section, this will show which Google thinks are the main keywords for your site, if they are ranking words that have very little or nothing in relation to your business, then you can re-write your page using more of your required keywords. Google does read the meta keyword tag when building this list of words. I proved that on my own site when Google suddenly started to list windows as the most common word, I removed windows from my meta and within a couple of weeks the count dropped.

Here's a screen shot of the keywords THEY list, which like you said, are simple and NOT what I want.

These are in NO WAY related to the keyword SETS that I base my pay per click Adwords ads on!

I don't want to have to manipulate what I say on the site for that, BUT I'm wondering if I can learn to use their "Rich Snippets" now, to tell them what the keyword sets should be, that I want? A learning opportunity? ;)

OH, another question - when doing my keywords meta, can I use keyword sets separated by commas, to make up keyword sets like I use with Adwords? For example:
process server Denver, process server Lakewood, etc?

It's too bad that Google doesn't let you reference your Adwords keywords sets as keywords for your actual site indexing.

If you want to do the job right, you are going to have to changed some of your wording so that the words you want targeting are in the top six in the image, it shouldn't take too long,

I never liked using phrases but that is not to say they don't work, there was once an unwritten rule that you should not use the same keyword more than 3 times in both the meta description and keywords tags.

One thing that is for certain and that is having the same keyword so many times on a page really does not help at all.

Their methodology seems senseless though.

It appears to be strictly based on the number of occurrences in the entire site. For example, I click on my second keyword "states" ( which is just crazy for the intent and focus of my site! ):

states
158
Variants encountered
states, state, stated

How can they do that?!

And again, I'm interested in keyword phrases, like I use in my Adwords sets.

This is why I've never paid much attention to that parameter, it's done in a senseless manner. It's purely a computer statistic. I could have 100 monkeys entering the keywords I wanted, then publish my site that way and I'd do great with keywords, while my site said nothing to any human.

Oh, another interesting thing I forgot to mention. 2/3 of my clicks from Google are coming from my organic SEO work ( why we're 4th from the top organically ) over all my keyword phrases. It almost doesn't even pay to run Adwords, but still does.

This appears to answer my question about whether keyword phrases will work in my meta keywords!

http://www.seologic.com/faq/keyword-optimization

Keyword Optimization: Individual Words or Phrases?

Consider two pages which simply feature large images, for example, pictures of two charts. The first page has the following meta keywords tag :

(1) <meta name="keywords" content="keyword analysis, keyword optimization">

The second page has the following meta keywords tag :

(2) <meta name="keywords" content="keyword, analysis, optimization">

If you search using the keyword phrase "keyword analysis" with and without the quotation marks, the first page will rank higher than the second page every time, all else being equal. The same goes for the keyword phrase "keyword optimization" and for the individual keyword, "keyword." On the other hand, the second page will win for the keyword searches "analysis" and "optimization."

One last thing, I sell software and when I create a site I add some Google Adsense, Only nickel and dime stuff but Google recognises you are advertising for them and your ranking improves.

I'm sorry but this is nothing to substantiate this claim. People, don't believe this, please.

Will Google give a higher rank to a website which runs AdSense?
Let's not get all hurt.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
