Sergey Losev is doing what I want to do in his travel website posted this morning. Here is another example from the New York Times:

Extremely hard in my opinion but see this being used in the coding of the page....probably with a lot of other cool cutting edge effects. They can afford the best programmers.

Intersection observer is something new on the horizon also that could be applied (newer browsers) but I have only scratched the surface with that. The forward reverse scrolling opacity effect can now be creatively controlled using some of its features.
