One-Page vs Multi-Page Website for a...

I apologize but it's become apparent that this thread was posted to the wrong forum so here it is again. Sorry for the oversight.

I have been using coffee-cup HTML Editor for well over 10-years. I should also add that I've been more than pleased with the results I've been able to achieve in using coffeecup's HTML Editor in addition to my having been able to achieve first-page organic rankings in the SERPs for a number of primary keywords in my profession. The irony is, I presently have no traffic given that the Coronavirus pandemic has literally devastated my profession of 30-years in which event I have been forced to rely on another skill set for launching a new career in order to generate a viable income. This noted, in reviewing a number of responsive website themes, I am leaning toward creating a single-page as opposed to a multi-page website. However, based on what I have read/learned to date, the consensus appears to be that it is more difficult (though not impossible) to achieve a first-page ranking in the SERPs given inherent content and keyword limitations in using a single-page website. Given I was able to achieve excellent SEO results in the past using a multi-page website, I have to admit that I am somewhat paranoid in creating and relying on a one-page website for launching a new career as an SEO analyst since it happens to be a very competitive field. All considered I would be most interested in knowing what others on the forum have to say in using and relying on a one-page website when it comes to performance and rankings in the SERPS? Thank you ahead of time.

Hi
Well there are 2 schools of thought about this
1/ A single-page website is considered to be a really good thing for SERP's nowadays, as you will have (or should have) loads of good, authoritative & relevant content, all in one page
----- however, it then depends on exactly how long that page will be, and how you link to different sections in order to give your visitors a good easily navigation to those sections, if it's to be as long as a rolled out toilet roll (sic Inger) :D then that may be considered not too good an experience for them (which doesn't alter the SERP's)
also depending on image content and other elements, within each section, could make the loading times for a single page slower (unless you implement some sort of "LAZY LOADING" system

2/ A multi-page website, offers the opportunity to get multi-pages on SERP's this still requires good logical navigation. Each page will load faster (one can still implement "Lazy Loading" on these pages too.

Then, of course, there may be others that have different opinions and recommendations to quote Inger again
"ask 10 designer/developers the same question and you will get 12 answers"

So there is no definitive answer really, one needs to look at the site and make a decision based on many factors, SEO work then comes into play and is still possibly the same amount of "BACK END" development for whichever design you opt for.

Whichever you choose it's going to take a while to achieve good sound organic positioning on SERP's, good luck in your new venture.

:lol::lol::lol: I wasn't aware of maybe having coined some expressions here, haha!

But seriously, there are also the 'in between' option. If you look at e.g. the templates Flux and The Coast, they are mainly one-pagers, but they have the odd 'side-kick' here and there in form of extra pages with more detailed information.

Hi Inger hehe they were made in a different thread and the one about the loo paper rolled out still makes me laugh every time I do a one page site.
So what's the difference between a one page site with a couple of pages with more details and a multi page site??????
In my book a one page site is exactly that, a one page site even with only 1 more page even with very little content is a multi page site.

The other thing to consider when thinking about one pagers is for mobile users, even though most are used to scrolling I have found through experience and research that even for the most avid mobile user there is a limit as to how much scrolling they have to do to get to the something that made them visit in the first page, so if they need to scroll to the last sheet of the loo paper to get there they may have already called it a day.

Do you remember when the first mobile sites came about? I don't remember exactly when, but it must have been before 2010. You kind of needed a .mobi domain, and people here were asking the CC developers to create a special version of the HTML Editor (this was before RWD and those apps) to create .mobi sites with. I think it was also before that viewport meta tag was born, so there were many views about what viewport width we should use, or actually; how many different widths.

We never got such a version of the Editor, but some people here were seriously discussing what to include in and exclude from such a site; you couldn't have all the stuff that you had in a normal site, so it would have to be a stripped down version etc etc...

I actually made one such site in addition to a normal-sized one for a client, and he was most appreciative. But it meant at least double work if not more, so I'm glad we have put that stage behind us.

Thank you. However, reading the response, I quickly realized that I should have emphasized my primary SEO concern or ranking for keywords where the consensus appears to be that a one-page website poses severe limitations (compared to a multi-page website) in ranking for more than one keyword phrase. The problem with most articles I've read written on this subject matter is that they fail to clarify whether the one keyword limitation includes keyword phrases that share a common word as opposed to those that don't. In other words, is it possible for a one-page website to rank for more than one keyword phrase whereby each keyword phrase contains a common word like 'SEO'? For example, SEO analyst, SEO white-hat, SEO black-hat strategies, etc. If so, a on-page website would appear to best serve my needs as I do not foresee any issues regarding length, content, page speed, etc. in electing to create a one-page website for the career I am considering. What say u?

Since my initial post on this subject matter, I am nearing completion of my new one-page site. As such, I wanted to ask Wayan, if and when he has a moment, if he would be so kind to take a quick look at my site (a work in progress) and let me know what he thinks. The link is at https://www.seoauditspecialists.com. Any suggestions including constructive criticism are most appreciated. Thank you ahead of time.

hello boilermaker73

A Nice clean and attractive site, but I think you need to take a look at the mobile device layout, especially the height for the top elements the words "SEO Audit Specialists" as it is all a bit squished up on my phone for both portrait & landscape view it covers the page title and the hamburger thingy.
the button

the red scroll back to the top is a bit intrusive, and to be honest, at mobile widths is a bit redundant, I can scroll back to the top almost as quick as that button takes me, and I also have more control about scrolling back up, I might not need to go back all the way (when I say I,, It means I as a visitor not necessarily Wayan as a designer :D )
Lastly just as a little thing not over important

You go from the first party
"WHO AM I" in the first section
to the second party in the other sections
"WHAT WE PROVIDE"
"WHAT WE'VE DONE
WHAT WE'RE CAPABLE OF"
"CONTACT US"

should it not be
WHAT I PROVIDE"
or
WHAT I CAN DO FOR YOU

WHAT I HAVE DONE
WHAT I AM CAPABLE OF"
"CONTACT ME"

(unless of course, you have a team,
in which case you should have a section prior to it)

"MEET THE TEAM" or words to that effect

As I said before though NICE and LOOKS GOOD

Wayan

PS I am sure others will also chip in
