Says my Responsive site is not...

Using Insight to check my site before it goes live (it's internal, or I would share the link).

Under search visibility, it says the site is not responsive, but it is - with 4 or 5 breakpoints.

Just wondering why it's having a problem detecting that...?

Hey Dave,

Can you open a support ticket and attach your index page for us so that we can take a look?

Thanks! :)

Just downloaded V3 update and get the same message for my website, which is hand-tooled but behaves responsively at screen sizes down to 300px. Do CoffeeCup or Google use some protocol which has to be observed to make web sites look responsive to machines, although it may be evident to us mere mortals?

Unless I am missing something, this is not a responsive website. There are no media queries in your markup that define how your content should be styled and different dimensions.

Our new Responsive Layout Maker solves one of the biggest challenges in responsive design, having a flexible core which can adapt based on the viewer’s screen size. In a nutshell, Responsive Layout Maker creates a responsive prototype website (called a layout). You build the structure of your website in Responsive Layout Maker and then export to any code editor to add your final content.

While this task may sound overwhelming at first, we highly recommend taking the time now to understand the power of Responsive Layout Maker. Getting a good grasp of the basics now will allow you to hit the ground running when our Responsive Site Designer program is released (Responsive Site Designer will be able to import RLM layouts). Once you understand the basics of how RLM functions, we are confident you will be a pro in no time.

If you have not done so yet, we also have a bunch of articles on RLM to help you get more familiar with how the software works. Our Quick Start Guide is very helpful when getting started with Responsive Layout Maker. We recommend taking a look at it as it explains many different parts of RLM.

Of course if you are stuck, we are here to help you through the process. We promise the process will be a positive one. ;)

Curiously though, it responds as responsive, how is that done without media queries these days? This wasn't built with CoffeeCup's RLM programs though, whatever you used to do this site you may want to contact those people and discuss it with them as to why it doesn't have the required items within the code to be considered responsive. :)

Google considers the site responsive and gives it a perfect score of 100 out of 100 for mobile user experience:

If I had to guess then, it is the way the site is coded. Website Insight looks for specific media queries in the HTML and in referenced CSS files. It appears all this is done with inline styles with no external css files which is not something we currently look for.

So if Google says you are Ok, you can ignore that suggestion in the software.

I don't always need media queries to be responsive.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.
