I just downloaded the Coffee Cup software (I'm a pretty skilled HTML developer, but I thought the Designer might be useful for fast prototyping). Tried to size my first page at 1024 x 768, however, and it keeps defaulting back to 960 x 768. Is there a reason for this? I wouldn't worry about it except the design contest I'm trying to enter requires 1024 x 768.

That's a weird behavior because I tested my setup and I can make pages 1024x768. When does it default back?

I may be way out here...but is it possible that you have started off with a template using the smaller dimensions? Not sure if that would make any difference, but it is another consideration.
I get this too. When I click on 1024 x 768, it changes to 960 x 768 (no templates, just blank pages). I just ignore it and type the dimensions in the height/width boxes below the preset sizes.

Good catch paintbrush. I was always entering the dimensions. When I click on 1152x864 the page goes to 1080x864. Actually none of mine end up the dimesion that I clicked on. I bet Scott will log this with the programers.

I hadn't tried any other sizes - just went straight to the other option and never looked back

That is interesting. Hope Scott picks this one up...
Don't forget you need to take into account the browser chrome (the borders of a Web browser window, which include the window frames, menus, toolbars and scroll bars). When designing a Web page, the browser chrome must be added to determine the width of the page.

Maybe putting the browser chromed sizes in parenthesis would help avoid any "confusion"?
I probably would never have noticed, if not for this thread, but once the question came up I will admit I didn't think about the diff between monitor sizes and usable space.
